Conservationists head off to Coldwater creek from Benwerrin Road.
All images on this and following pages are recent photos (Feb-June 2000) from the Otway Ranges, Victoria Australia.
As part of its ongoing monitoring of logging operations within the Otway ranges, OREN (Otway Ranges Environment Network)has been watching progress of a proposed logging road within the catchment of the West Barwon Dam. The area can be reached by driving around the dam to the west, past Lake Elizabeth and along Kaangalak Rd to the Benwerrin Lake Sabine Road. look for a small closed track on your right in the vicinity of Coldwater Creek.
Fern Gully will be destroyed if the proposed road goes ahead
The double sets of track markers, red tape and blue paint are clearly visible on the trees along the proposed road easement. To date Barwon Water and NRE have not logged within the water catchments due to public pressure and it is important that this pressure be maintained to prevent construction of this road. Road construction has been shown to be one of the major contributors to water quality degradation, particularly within highly erodible catchments.

Best Practice.
