Eyebrow Piercing
EYEBROW PIERCING ORIGIN: - The Eyebrow is another modern piercing although some tribes did do ritual facial piercing the eyebrow as such is definitely along the same league as the tongue and has become increasingly popular over the past 10 years. It has probably become more acceptable in the past 5 years and as jewelry is becoming more attractive and discreet it is not uncommon for people to choose this piercing as the only body adornment that they wear.
Now in the past twelve months we have done between 10 to 40 eyebrow piercings per week on average in our shop.
There are few real risks with he eyebrow piercing although it is a piercing of the muscular tissue above the eye little real damage can be done in this area.
PLACEMENT: - The placement of the eyebrow piercing is not only important for aesthetics but also for safety and for the health of the piercing.
It should be to the outer side of the eyebrow and should never be done straight up and down. It should tilt at the top towards the ear about 2mm further than the bottom. It should be done approximately 10mm in length and never less than that and not much longer as this would be going far too deep and the risk of healing problems is increased.
JEWELLERY:- A ring is better as a bar puts direct pressure on the skin over the piercing - a curved bar may be used but is difficult to turn. All piercings weep a clear substance during the first few weeks "lymph" - and bars hold that lymph inside the piercing which gives bacteria something to grow in and promotes infection. A titanium ring is light weight and can be turned to discharge lymph. It is however important not to turn the ring unless it is clean of any discharged lymph and do not to fiddle with the piercing unless your hands are clean. See healing Instructions. Titanium Ball Closure Rings 1.2mm x 9mm have a very low risk of healing out or migrating - bars migrate a lot faster from a fresh piercing. Once healed a bar is suitable at about a 10mm length and as the scar tissue is tougher even if it puts some pressure on the area it is not as likely to migrate. Gold Zirconium, Black PVD, and Niobium Rings are safe alternatives for initial piercings and Surgical Bars or rings are safe once the piercing is healed.
I never use 1.6mm or larger jewellery in the eyebrow because the
tissue is soft and the weight of the larger gauge jewellery is very likely to
tear down on the piercing and/or increase the chance of migration or healing
out of the jewellery. 1mm is also not appropriate as it is too small and 'like
wire cutting cheese' the thinner gauge is more inclined to cut it's way out
and cause migration of the piercing.
RISKS:- There is a nerve in the edge of the face but it is not in the eyebrow so nerve damage is not an issue unless of course the piercer places it way too deep, very far to the edge of the face or the client wants a piercing done close to the nose bridge and even then - the nerve is deep and runs into the nasal passage therefore the likelihood of hitting it would be minimal..
There is also a muscle that runs around the actual eyebrow and if that is damaged or cut through with a deep piercing it could lead to problems. As with any piercing there is always the chance that someone will do something stupid and cause a major problem, this is the importance of seeking a professional piercer.
The risk of infection is increased with the eyebrow piercing through it being pulled and fluff entering the site during your sleep. This can be avoided by sleeping on the other side, taping just the edge of the ring down during your sleep and then cleaning it well upon waking up, making sure that nothing sticks to the ring.
Touching the piercing is probably the worst thing for it and people just can't resist that fiddle while reading a book or walking down the street. Do resist the temptation to touch and turn your piercing unless you are cleaning it. If you get anything, fluff, germs whatever into it then you can loose the piercing. (I had one client who got hydraulic fluid into his at work and had a major problem and he had to remove the ring instantly.)
Rejection is the next largest risk this occur mainly if the piercing is done too shallow or poorly placed - a straight piercing has all the weight of the ring on the top of the piercing. As the skin is soft it will tear slowly down and eventually migrate right out. Barbells put in as first jewelry are also more likely to tear out as if they are caught, they rip the new tissue and will be rejected much more easily. At Body pleasure we will not put a bar in first as it is not as safe as the ring. The angle spreads the weight across the length and helps to prevent this from happening.
Some eyebrow piercing will migrate no matter what you do - it could be infection, fluff, being turned too much, being slept on - there will be something that causes it and if your piercing is rejecting you need to identify what the problem is and either stop it or remove the ring.
If you have a major problem and the skin goes red right across the length of the piercing then it is almost doomed and should probably be removed.- applying olive oil to the skin across the top can help but care should be taken not to get it into the piercing.
HEALING:- This is a topic that is very controversial as each piercer has different ideas on what heals. Basically the skin needs time to form a tube of scar tissue around the piercing. If it is kept clean and free from dirt, germs and fluff then it will heal quickly and can be healed in roughly 3 to 8 weeks. Everyone is different.
We recommend using salt water and Betadine liquid. You can use saline solution or make up your own by using 1 cup of boiled water and 1/2 tsp. of salt.
Betadine - There is controversy over Betadine Liquid as it can impede cell generation and therefore slow healing. However it is great for killing bacteria and so we say use it sparingly once a day and then once every second day as the piercing heals providing you use salt water to help keep your piercing dry it should not cultivate bacteria easily.
Do NOT USE - Cotton wool, tissues or anything fibrous to clean your piercing - use your fingers - the fibers can enter the piercing and cause a splinter reaction which will cause the piercing to migrate.
Any problems see our GENERAL HEALING page.
