Rose Guide

April

Lawns: Lawn rejuvenation should be done now. Lower the mower blades for a close cut, and then aerate the lawns with an aerator or fork. Pay particular attention to bare areas. Then spread a sandy loam lightly over the lawn. Do not cover too deeply as the soil is cooling now and the lawn may not come through. Apply seed to the bare areas and lightly rake over.

Bulbs:  It's time to plant a few of the late flowering bulbs, the best of which are the hippeastrums and belladonna. During this time do not disturb or over water them as they may not flower.

Evergreens: This is your last chance to plant evergreens so they can become established before the onset of cold weather.

General: If its been raining, check for snails, and if necessary put down some snail killer. Propagate conifers and native plants. Plan ahead for some winter colour with with azaleas, etc.
