Before planting your roses it is important
to prepare the soil. Mulch the surface layer so as to prevent soil drying out
too quickly, and avoid planting if heavy rain has saturated the soil. Roses can be purchased either bare rooted
or in pots. Bare rooted plants will be surrounded by sawdust and wrapped in
plastic, and will be cheaper than container grown roses. Bare rooted roses are
more fragile and can only be planted in late autumn and winter. Container roses
can be planted at any time.
Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the
plant and roots without bending them. If the rose is bare rooted create a
central mound for the plant. Do not bury the main stem below the ground. Fill
the hole , firmly pressing down the surrounding soil, then water well to remove
air pockets within the soil. Lightly mulch around the rose. Do not place any
manure around the plant as this may tend to burn the stem. Standard roses will
require staking. with the stake being placed on the side which receives
the prevailing winds.
