Nose Bridge

ABOVE ~ VERTICAL OR TRANSVERSE NOSE BRIDGE.
BELOW ~ HORIZONTAL OR STANDARD NOSE BRIDGE
(THIS ONE IS PLACED A LITTLE HIGHER THAN NORMALLY DONE.)

NOSE BRIDGE PIERCING ORIGIN: - This is a relatively modern piercing based largely on the Indian tradition of Bindis and gems placed on the forehead. Especially the vertical nose bridge which is a very difficult piercing to do and heal. The art of this piercing is to make sure that it is completely straight and deep enough to heal without being to deep for safety. Like many piercings, this is not a piercing that should be done by amateur.
PLACEMENT: - The nose bridge piercing runs between the eyes on the bridge of the nose. While usually done horizontally about 12mm wide with either a barbell or ball closure ring (1.6mm /14ga x 12mm /1/2inch). Vertical placement is more unusual and a PTFE barbell or Curved Bar of about 15mm to 20mm length should be used. Depending upon the length of the piercing and the material the bar is made from. A longer PTFE bar is usually the safest choice as it can be shortened easily (this is the PTFE Bar that we use - a soft bar that has surgical or titanium balls).
RISKS:-
There is a high risk of the piercer doing this crooked or off center which looks ridiculous - I have seen many people with small silver sleepers sitting very crookedly in these piercings - I can't imagine a professional using such cheap jewelry or placing any piercing so badly so make sure that you check what jewelry will be used and where it will be placed. Check and double check placement before this one is done, make sure it is marked correctly and that your piercer is very experienced.
Theoretically there is a major nerve running through the forehead into the center of the nose. It runs through the eyebrow but is quite deep and to pierce it so deeply would be very irresponsible. I have seen some piercer do some very irresponsible and unprofessional piercings and therefore we would have to say that there is a risk of this nerve having damage done to it. More likely with the horizontal piercing although it would be a very poor piercer to cause a major problem through hitting the nerve. When the area is clamped if the major nerve was also clamped then the client will find it extremely painful and if the nerve was touched by the needle then it would cause excruciating shooting pain.
The most common problem with this piercing would be the likelihood of infection and/or rejection. If this piercing is pulled in your sleep or caught on clothing it is likely to become irritated easily and therefore the risk of rejection is high. Being on the face the temptation to touch it or move it during the day is very high. Touching a piercing without first washing your hands is a common cause of infection.
Even if you do everything right and the piercing is placed correctly it may still be rejected because it is in an area where there is very little fatty tissue. Any piercing over bone has a high chance of rejection and needs to be monitored closely.
HEALING:- General healing instructions should be adhered to and care should be taken not to fiddle with, touch or let others touch your new piercing. If it is likely to get pulled on in the pub then I would have to say - stay home until it is healed or cover it before you go our drinking.
If the piercing becomes red over the top of the jewelry between the piercing sites then it is likely that it is being rejected - this can be helped by the use of olive oil however extreme care needs to be taken to prevent the oil getting into the piercing itself - just apply a little over the red area to help give the skin some moisture which should help it stretch over the jewelry.
Any problems see our GENERAL HEALING page.
ADVANTAGES:- There are many reasons for getting a nose bridge piercing.
Trend - it is not exactly a trend in itself although it is becoming increasingly trendy to have unusual piercings - 'something different.'
Sexual reasons - there is no real sexual reason - just general body adornment.
Medical reasons - there are no medical reasons for the nose bridge piercing.
