Female Nipple Piercing

NIPPLE PIERCING ORIGIN: - The female nipple piercing has not a lot of exposure throughout history, this piercing was predominantly worn by males and we can only assume that this is due to breast feeding. The women needed to feed their young and without the advanced equipment, sterilization and removable jewelry - it would have been hard for women to have this piercing. The risks today are very minimal. Some tribes would actually cast out a woman or young girl if she had suffered damage to the breast or nipple - it was considered that she would not make a good wife or mother and therefore was left to die. We can presume that this attitude would have prevented any piercing of the female nipples.

PLACEMENT: - The placement of the nipple will vary a little - person to person. Nipple piercings need to be the correct depth. It is vital that the female nipple piercing is done correctly for a number of reasons. If placed directly through the center of the actual nipple, towards the back but not into the areola, it will heal well and should not have any major problems. Women can still breast feed after a nipple piercing, it is suggested that they remove the jewelry for feeding - I used our PTFE bars with very soft threads as they did not hurt or catch to insert or remove, internally threaded bars are also a good choice for breastfeeding women.

It should be straight and the correct size ring should be used to allow for movement. The size of the jewelry will depend greatly on the size of the nipple.

RISKS:-

Placement is very important with this piercing, it is important not to be done too deeply as if it clips the edge of the milk ducts then it will cause healing problems, the nipple itself is made up of fatty tissue which is slightly porous to allow for milk flow however, it id more or less like a sponge and the piercing will not block the flow of milk through it. If it is deeper and goes into the areola, it can lead to problems such as blocked milk ducts, mastitis and length healing times.

If the piercing is crooked there can be healing problems as there are 4 main ducts which run into the nipple - two at the top, two at the bottom - if these are clipped it may cause healing problems. It is best to see a professional and make sure that the mark the piercing correctly and it will be placed straight through the actual nipple and not too deep.

If the nipple is small or the skin soft there can be problems with tearing or ripping of the skin - this piercing rarely rejects but it can happen. As the piercing can only be placed as deep as the nipple is large, a larger nipple is ideal and pierces easily.

Inverted Nipples - Yes a professional should be able to pierce someone with inverted nipples, the piercing will actually stop the nipple inverting and may even help with breast feeding in future. Do not get your nipples pierced while you are pregnant - it is actually not a good idea to get any piercing while pregnant.

HEALING:- This is a topic that is very controversial as each piercer has different ideas on what heals. Basically the skin needs time to form a tube of scar tissue around the piercing. If it is kept clean and free from dirt, germs and fluff then it will heal quickly and can be healed in roughly 6 to 8 weeks. Everyone is different. Sometimes women find that around the time of menstruation the nipples become tender and the piercing may even weep a little - this is quite normal and tends to be more when the piercing is new. Once the piercing is well healed and settled this will stop. It is a good idea to maintain high hygiene standards and clean twice a day if there is a discharge - even once the piercings are healed.

We recommend using salt water and Betadine liquid. You can use saline solution or make up your own by using 1 cup of boiled water and 1/2 tsp. of salt.

Betadine - There is controversy over Betadine Liquid as it can impede cell generation and therefore slow healing. However it is great for killing bacteria and so we say use it sparingly once a day and then once every second day as the piercing heals providing you use salt water to help keep your piercing dry it should not cultivate bacteria easily.

Do NOT USE - Cotton wool, tissues or anything fibrous to clean your piercing - use your fingers - the fibers can enter the piercing and cause a splinter reaction which will cause the piercing to migrate.

Avoid swimming pools as the chlorine does not kill all of the germs and this is a place where infections can start.
