Hafada Piercing

HAFADA PIERCING ORIGIN: - I find the history behind these piercings fascinating and varied. Arabic boys would begin to get Hafada piercings in pairs when puberty hit they were a symbol of manhood and bravery. Other tribes did these as a rite of passage. They used thongs of pig skin, bone, and various adornments to adorn themselves as a ritual or symbolic sign of manhood.

PLACEMENT: - These are placed anywhere in the scrotum however, the traditional placement was in pairs each side or in a row down the center line. Many combinations can be done to achieve different effects.

RISKS:- These are generally not classed as a risky piercing if done professionally as the risk of piercing too deep and into the actual scrotum, withall it is a risk, if marked carefully and done by a professional is extremely unlikely.

The depth varies and the piercer will determine how deep the piercing should be placed and what jewellery to insert, generally a 1.6mm x 12mm Titanium ball closure ring is adequate.

The other risk would hjave to be infection and the risk of that infection getting into the testie and causing problems with fertility. This would be extremely rare if done professionally and due care taken to clean and heal the piercing.

If we look back at the history of these piercings and the primative way in which they were done - I am sure that there were probably some problems caused by the unsterile and inappropriate adornments used. However, now that we have Health Regulations, sterilisation and a great deal of knowledge about safety and sterilisation, these risks are much less.

HEALING:- This piercing can take a bit longer to heal due to it's placement and the presance of hair that may go through the piercing About 8 weeks would be normal. I recommend abstaining for 2 weeks and then make sure you clean well after sex. A condom is going to do very little to prevent cross contamination or infection iand so care must be taken to be responsible especially with casual partners.

We recommend using salt water and Betadine liquid. You can use saline solution or make up your own by using 1 cup of boiled water and 1/2 tsp. of salt.

Betadine - There is controversy over Betadine Liquid as it can impede cell generation and therefore slow healing. However it is great for killing bacteria and so we say use it sparingly once a day and then once every second day as the piercing heals providing you use salt water to help keep your piercing dry it should not cultivate bacteria easily.

Do NOT USE - Cotton wool, tissues or anything fibrous to clean your piercing - use your fingers - the fibers can enter the piercing and cause a splinter reaction which will cause infection and pain.

You also need to be careful with toilet paper, strictly shake only.

Any problems see our GENERAL HEALING page.

ADVANTAGES:- There are many reasons for getting any piercing..
