Male Nipple Piercing
NIPPLE PIERCING ORIGIN: - The male nipple piercing is more commonly spoken about throughout history - there is some evidence that the ancient Romans used this piercing to fasten their robes but this is not proven. There is much evidence of tribes doing the piercing as a rite of passage and for ceremonial reasons. The American Indians are noted to have used this piercing in the sun dance ceremony which was done to bring good fortune to the tribe. The women were not allowed to participate in this as they had "shared their blood with Mother Earth" during childbirth and menstruation. This was the men of the tribes way of sharing such pain and blood as a self sacrifice to Mother Earth.
In modern times this piercing is done more for sexual and aesthetic reasons - the increased sensitivity afforded by a correctly placed male nipple piercing can be extremely erotic and then the macho image of having a nipple piercing also helps this piercing to remain popular.
PLACEMENT: - The placement of the nipple will vary very little for the male nipple. It is ideally marked at 12mm and placed behind the nipple. This piercing is generally done into the aureole (unlike the female nipple). Nipple piercings need to be the correct depth and in the center of the nipple. If it is placed too high - it will make the nipple sag towards the ground. If the piercing is too low - it will make the nipple point upward. A perfect piercing is done dead center and the nipple sits out nicely with the jewelry behind it.
Problems with placement are mainly aesthetic and the placement rarely affects healing times.
RISKS:-
The number one risk with this piercing is tearing of the nipple or infection.
Tearing is generally caused by poor choice of jewelry - sleepers, ear studs and small jewelry is not safe for a male nipple. I would not use smaller than 1.6mm x 12mm BCR. For first piercing.
Infection, if the nipple is not cared for and an infection develops, it can cause the tissue behind the nipple to become inflamed and a severe infection will need to be treated with antibiotics. Don't mess about if you have any swelling behind your nipple.
The main thing to be aware of is that this piercing may take some time to heal and can take several months to settle completely. It will heal in a short amount of time but as the scar tissue inside a males nipple tends to be soft, it can tear open a small amount very easily. This will often just cause some weeping or scabbing of the area. It is a good idea not to play roughly or hang things on a male nipple for at least 4 to 6 months. Once it has settled completely it will toughen up and wont tear easily and you can safely pull on, hang things on and have fun with your piercing. But, take care not to do anything too dangerous.
HEALING:- This is a topic that is very controversial as each piercer has different ideas on what heals. Basically the skin needs time to form a tube of scar tissue around the piercing. If it is kept clean and free from dirt, germs and fluff then it will heal quickly and can be healed in roughly 6 to 8 weeks. Everyone is different. Sometimes women find that around the time of menstruation the nipples become tender and the piercing may even weep a little - this is quite normal and tends to be more when the piercing is new. Once the piercing is well healed and settled this will stop. It is a good idea to maintain high hygiene standards and clean twice a day if there is a discharge - even once the piercings are healed.
We recommend using salt water and Betadine liquid. You can use saline solution or make up your own by using 1 cup of boiled water and 1/2 tsp. of salt.
Betadine - There is controversy over Betadine Liquid as it can impede cell generation and therefore slow healing. However it is great for killing bacteria and so we say use it sparingly once a day and then once every second day as the piercing heals providing you use salt water to help keep your piercing dry it should not cultivate bacteria easily.
Do NOT USE - Cotton wool, tissues or anything fibrous to clean your piercing - use your fingers - the fibers can enter the piercing and cause a splinter reaction which will cause the piercing to migrate.
Avoid swimming pools as the chlorine does not kill all of the germs and this is a place where infections can start.
Any problems see our GENERAL HEALING page.
