Septum Piercing
SEPTUM PIERCING ORIGIN: - The septum is a tribal piercing done in many tribes especially around New Guinea. New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands. Some tribes in the African area also did this piercing. It is placed in the soft tissue in the septum or center of the nose. Traditionally bones and the like were used however today we have many diverse styles of jewelry available.
PLACEMENT: - This piercing needs to be placed carefully and feeling the tissue inside the nose is important. There is a softer area of cartilage where it thins out, the piercing needs to be placed carefully through this area. Care needs to be taken in placement, if the piercing is not placed correctly or not done straight, the needle has the chance of hitting the harder more formed cartilage which will cause extra pain for the client and may cause the piercing to be crooked or sit on an angle.
It is most common for either a ball closure ring or a septum retainer to be used as the first jewelry - the retainer (as in above photo) is great to hide it while working etc. and is a popular choice.
RISKS:-
There is a high risk of the piercer doing this crooked or off center which looks ridiculous. This piercing needs to be done correctly to make sure that any jewelry will sit well.
If the piercing is not placed correctly and the needle hits the edge of the harder cartilage, it can cause healing problems especially if a canulae needle is used as they scrape the cartilage in effect shaving it and this may take some time to heal.
There are no major nerves or arteries in this area and to hit anything major one would have to be piercing incredibly high up into the nasal passage. I doubt that would be possible.
There is a small risk with the retainer that it may fall out or get caught, this is something that does not happen often but care must be taken especially once healed to ensure that it does not fall into one nostril and enter the nasal passage.
HEALING:- General healing instructions should be adhered to and care should be taken not to fiddle with or touch your piercing. Some people have found that basically putting their nose into a glass of salt water and blowing bubbles is an effective way of cleaning it. As this piercing can be difficult to get at, the limited use of cotton buds can be used with caution. You must be very careful to wet the cotton first so as lint and fibers don't come off into your piercing.
Blowing your nose may be difficult for the first 24 hours and we don't recommend getting any piercing especially this one if you have a cold or virus causing excess mucus in the nostrils.
Once healed it is a good idea to regularly change and clean your jewelry with a disinfectant or by boiling it. This piercing can attract a build up of dead skin cells and mucus which tends to make it smell. Regular cleaning will stop this from happening. If you find that your nose gets a strange smell in it or it seems that your jewelry has a smell, it is a good idea to take it out and boil the jewelry for at least 10 minutes and rinse the piercing. Toothpaste is also great to clean jewellery with if it gets a smell.. just make sure you rinse it well before replacing it. As with ost piercings, general hygiene is important.
Any problems see our GENERAL HEALING page.
