Surface Piercings

Lower Back Piercing.

Surface chest piercing - two weeks old. Healing well.

This shows a surface piercing below the navel.

This is a stomach design on "Stacie" who sent me this picture for the site.

I asked Stacie to give me a run down of how they healed and this is what she wrote...

"The enclosed picture is my stomach, I had them done at Cherry Bomb in Marysville, California. I got them pierced on November 7th..."

" I took the picture the night that I received the piercings, the red lines around them are from where the piercing dude marked the spots. Its been about 4 months now and only two of them are having a little trouble healing. A polyp developed on the two in the middle, vertical to my navel. The one at the bottom healed the best. No problems at all. "

SURFACE TO SURFACE PIERCING ORIGIN: - Like most of these decorative and different body adornments they have been around for years but there is little real history behind them. For thousands of years man has felt the need to adorn his body in different ways and placing objects under the skin and through parts of the body has long been a form of self expression, bravery, rite of passage, body reclaiming and body adornment.

PLACEMENT: -The basic rule of thumb was always I if you can pinch a lump of skin up then you can pierce it. It really is not that simple and not being able to pinch up a lump of skin does not rule out piercing it however, it may be difficult and only a true professional will be able to do these more complex piercings safely.

Placement needs to be thought about carefully and the following points need to be considered-

All of these factors are going to influence the piercers decision on how to place these piercings to gain the optimal effect along with the safest placement.

RISKS:- All surface to surface piercings are HIGH RISK as far as the risk of them healing out. Any piercing place through a relatively flat area of skin is at an increased risk of being rejected. Some people heal these piercings quickly and others reject them instantly. As a professional piercer we can recommend the safest position and placement to avoid healing problems but there is always a risk of rejection no matter how well these piercings are placed.

Each piercing depending upon placement will carry it's own individual risk of infection and hitting nerves etc. This is something you will need to research and discuss with your piercer.

Infection must be avoided and/or treated immediately with antibiotics.

HEALING:- General healing should take about 6 to 8 weeks but some time for the piercing to settle is normal. These piercings need to be treated with extreme care and not pulled or bumped for the first 5 to 6 months. This allows the scar tissue to strengthen and the body is then unlikely to heal the piercing out. If it is pulled on and begins to migrate it is often a no win situation and it may result in the loss of the piercing.

Olive oil is great to use on these piercings with extreme caution. Apply Olive oil to the skin over the top of the piercing without getting any into the actual piercing itself. This helps to make the skin over the piercing flexible and pliable. It may also help to regenerate skin and stop migration.

Any problems see our GENERAL HEALING page.

ADVANTAGES:- There are many reasons for getting surface to surface piercings.
